SkillLab is a software company based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The company normally works with public and private actors in the areas of employment and education. Its central work focuses on building skill-recognition systems for people, jobs and education. SkillLab focuses in particular on capturing ESCO data and allows drawing meaningful conclusions from it. A core target group of users of SkillLab are people who profit from the identification of transferable skills to transition into new jobs and industries. SkillLab has been recognized by the European Commission as a winner of the European Social Innovation Competition (Skills for Tomorrow – Shaping a green and digital future) as well as one of Europe’s Top 10 deep tech scale-ups by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Currently, SkillLab works as a partner in two active Erasmus+ KA2 (VET and Alliances for Innovation) projects and will start working on a Horizon Europe project soon (signatory phase).

Project 1
- Theme: Reducing barriers for refugees and migrants to connect to local employers Labour markets often run on brands and networks. People have brands on their CVs, which signal trust to employers. Employers themselves are brands, which might be recognized by people. The actual job title often only makes sense in conjunction with a “brand”. The mere title (think of a Marketing Assistant) often does not signal much. Another way to overcome information asymmetry are networks. Employers or people requesting information or having someone vouch for them. For refugees and migrants, both of these means are not available. The project therefore strives to test and develop a more bias-free way to facilitate the communication between refugees and employers. The approach should be replicable and multilingual. The goal of the project is to work with employers that are (because of geography, industry and legal conditions) open to employ refugees and migrants to test and define - A skills-based and multilingual approach of describing specific labour market demands, that are based on frameworks such as ESCO - Channels and communication in the local ecosystem as well as digital channels to successfully amplify the skills-based job information to the target audience (e.g. through local NGOs or Social Media) - An easy to understand and transparent application process - Define linkages to local education systems
Project 2
- Theme: Better Career Orientation for Ex-Offenders For people that served a sentence in prison, career orientation is difficult: They fight with stigma, they have not been participating in the labour market during their sentence and sometimes they did not participate in the formal labour market prior to their time in prison. However, these people almost certainly did acquire skills in their lives - before their time in prison and often while working or learning in prison programs. To avoid people falling back into “old habits” it is of utmost importance to show how their skills (no matter how/where acquired) have a relevance for civil labour market occupations. The project aims to - Develop an understanding of “pathways” that can lead from a non-formal to a formal working experience - Identify how work- and education programs in prisons help developing important and recognisable skills - Shed light into the requirements for service delivery for optimal outcomes (from a technical and service-design perspective)
